Windham Youth Soccer Association

Does your role as a WYSA coach emphasize fairness to all players, regardless of skill level?

Do you show respect to everyone on and off the field?
Are you helping to keep it fun for the kids?

WYS Coach Checklist

I praise kids just for showing up, ready to participate.

I compliment players showing positive behavior.

I don't overreact when kids make mistakes; I help them learn from mistakes.

I have reasonable expectations, understanding this is a developmental program.

I treat all players with respect, avoiding negative comments.

I remind my kids to give themselves a break when they're down.

I remind myself that losing with pride is better than winning at all costs.

I always do my best to make each game fun for all players, regardless of skill.

I emphasize teamwork, and help my kids think "we" instead of "me."

I am a role model of good sportsmanship:

  • (a) Winning without gloating
  • (b) Losing without complaining
  • (c) Treating opponents and officials with fairness & courtesy.

As a coach, you have the power to inflate or deflate each and every one of your player's self-esteem.

How do you choose to use your power?
